Nueva Andalucía – Puerto Banús – Marbella West

Nueva Andalucía and Puerto Banús, i.e. the western part of Marbella, are one of the most popular areas of the Costa del Sol, and are increasingly popular among investors.

Nueva Andalucía and Puerto Banús are neighborhoods in the West of Marbella. It is the largest area of Marbella, covering several square kilometres, it is almost a separate small town. It is located in a small valley, which has become famous under the name Golf-Valley. Nueva Andalucía is generally considered one of Marbella’s most popular residential areas, as it is not overdeveloped, with many open green areas left undeveloped. With wide streets, it has all the comforts of the city, yet it abounds with events, restaurants, and entertainment venues. This area of the Costa del Sol is quieter, more family-friendly, despite being within walking distance of Puerto Banús and home to buildings such as the Centro Plaza and the new Marbella Arena-Auditorium. In 2019, approximately 17,727 inhabitants live in Nueva Andalucia.

The Western part of Marbella includes the famous Puerto Banus and Nueva Andalucia, which lies north of it and continues, stretching to the AP-7 highway, the Guadaiza River to the west and the Rio Verde to the east. Nueva Andalucía offers stunning Mediterranean views with an equally fantastic mountain backdrop and La Concha, the iconic symbol of Marbella. San Pedro de Alcántara borders the western part of Nueva Andalucía. In the north, it borders the settlements of Benahavís and Istán. To the east is the beginning of the western part of Marbella. Finally, the southern part of Nueva Andalucía lies on the Mediterranean coast, with Puerto Banús being the southernmost point of the mainland.
Some of the most famous golf courses on the Costa del Sol are here: Aloha Golf Club, Los Naranjos Golf Club and Real Club de Golf Las Brisas.

If you are coming from Malaga Airport, it is a 45-minute drive to Algeciras via the AP-7 toll road, which is 57.4 km. If you arrive from Gibraltar airport, it is an hour’s drive on the AP-7 highway in the direction of Málaga, which is 67.9 km, but the travel time is only 35-40 minutes.

Although the Puerto Banús marina complex maintains the illusion of an old Spanish fishing village, the complex was actually designed and built in 1970. The tourist complex consisting of the port and the shopping district, as well as the Nueva Andalucía residential area, were all the brainchild of real estate developer José Banús (Puerto Banús’ full name is Puerto José Banús).

José Banús Masdeu was born in 1906 in Maso, Tarragona, and left school at the age of fourteen to work with his father in the construction industry. The father-son duo moved to Madrid and founded the company “Construcciones Molan y Banús”, which won the contract to build the access road to Valle de los Caidos. From then on, their success only increased until Banús became the owner and builder of a whole series of large residential complexes in Madrid.

In the late 1950s, he purchased the land between the Guadaliza and Verde Rivers, claiming at the time that he intended to use it for cattle ranching. The Tourism Development Act of 1963 opened up a huge opportunity for Banús. His plans for the tourism development and promotion of the land were approved in 1964, allegedly for the construction and commercial exploitation of the “Andalucía la Nueva (Marbella) Center of National Tourist Interest” for 99 years on behalf of his company, José Banús SA. Banús commissioned the architect Antonio Lamela to prepare preliminary plans for a new port.

Lamela’s designs depicted the design of a futuristic semi-circular arched tower block of six 16-story high-rises. Alfonso Hohenlohe, the founder of the Marbella Club Hotel, was horrified by the whole project and declared: “If this project goes ahead, I will sell my hotel and leave Marbella with all my family and friends”. Monseñor Rodrigo Bocanegra arranged a conciliatory meeting between him and Banús, after which Hohenlohe compromised and called his favorite architect, Noldi Schreck, in Mexico City (who had already designed his hotel’s beach club) and asked him to come to Marbella and work with Banús on a a project whereby the new buildings will not be higher than the treetops.

The construction of Puerto Banús began in 1965 and the main works were completed by 1968. The opening ceremony was on August 2, 1970, attended by 1,700 people led by Prince Reiner of Monaco and Grace Kelly, Liza Minelli, Shāh Karim al-Husayni (Aga Khan IV), creator of Porto Cebo, Italy. International celebrities, including Hugh Heftner, who bought 120 hectares of land in Los Monteros, but never received permission for the “Cuidad Playboy” project. Hefner arrived at Malaga airport in his own Boeing 707 with Playboy bunnies and Roman Polanski.

The construction of the “Andalucía la Nueva” urbanization (now known as Nueva Andalucía) actually began as early as 1964, and the Hotel Andalucía Plaza (Hard Rock Hotel from 2022) opened in 1970.
