Mijas and Fuengirola


The municipality of Mijas has three distinct parts, Pueblo Mijas, Mijas Costa and La Cala de Mijas, which are very different in nature. Pueblo Mijas is one of Andalusia’s most famous whitewashed villages (due to its proximity to the coast), with its characteristic narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. The village is located 10 km from the coast, at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level, with stunning views of the coast. Popular with tourists and holidaymakers alike, the village attracts many artists and writers. Because of its popularity, the local authorities have set up an administrative office specifically to assist local foreign residents with various matters.

Mijas Costa, which includes the town of Fuengirola, has a very different atmosphere. Fuengirola is now one of the largest cities on the Costa del Sol, with a tourism boom dating back to the 1960s. As a large city, it offers a wide range of amenities, with a shopping centre (Miramar), large chains of DIY stores, cinemas with English-language films, and a wealth of tourist attractions such as Aqua Park Mijas (water amusement park) and BioParc (zoo).

Fuengirola has a good transport infrastructure, with several bus and train services running daily between the resort and Malaga airport. You can also rent a car for your holiday.
By car, Fuengirola is located just off the N340 motorway or the A7 motorway. There is a regular bus service from Fuengirola to Malaga airport and Malaga city centre. There is also a train service from Fuengirola to Malaga city centre.

La Cala de Mijas, despite being a much quieter area, still offers a wide range of services. It has several golf courses and a wide range of cafés and restaurants.

La Cala de Mijas “La Cueva de Mijas” is an idyllic stretch of golden sandy beach in the middle of the Costa del Sol, between Marbella and Fuengirola. Besides its beauty, the local community and sporting opportunities make it attractive to property buyers. If you are looking for a home for sale in or around Marbella, La Cala de Mijas and Riviera are areas where you can find the right one for you at a relatively low price.

The oldest part of the coastal village, which is expanding inland, has typical village houses and narrow streets.

New settlements (which have been expanding and developing in recent years) on the other side of the coastal road are within walking distance of the beach and shops. The La Cala Golf Resort complex is a little misleading in name, as it is actually quite a distance from the village. This beautiful resort has 3 great golf courses, a pleasant clubhouse and other amenities, but is not within walking distance of the beach, only accessible by car.

Property prices in Mijas and Fuengirola
Mijas Pueblo, with its rural charm and stunning views, has always been a desirable place to live and consequently prices have always been relatively higher than the coastal part of the municipality. Here, the price of a villa ranges from around €800,000 to €1,000,000 depending on location, views and other factors. A two-bedroom apartment is available for around €250-300,000. Much bigger price differences can be found closer to the coast in Mijas Costa.

As in Benalmadena, prices in Mijas can vary quite widely, so it is impossible to give a general idea. As always, much depends on the location of the property, the proximity to the beach and services, and the quality of the property. In Fuengirola, the parking space that comes with the property increases the value of the property, as parking is often a problem in this town.

Property prices in La Cala de Mijas have risen sharply in recent years. We are aware of a number of residential property developments which have sold quite quickly. We estimate that prices in La Cala de Mijas have increased by 25% in the last 2 years. There are fewer villas in this area and the majority of new developments are apartment blocks or terraced houses.

Another popular way to holiday in Fuengirola is to rent apartments. Many apartment buildings are within easy reach of the beaches. A 3 bedroom apartment can be rented for around €1500 per week in high season.

Renting a villa in Fuengirola

There are of course a number of villas for rent in Fuengirola, most of which are located in residential areas such as Campo Mijas and Las Acacias, which are just a few minutes’ drive from the resort centre and beaches. A 3 bedroom villa with pool and air conditioning can be rented for around €2,500 per week.
